Elementary : Character

Over the course of their Elementary years, our students gain a deeper understanding of their responsibilities as individuals and citizens. Our goal is to develop responsible and caring citizens who know how to meet the social and ethical challenges of their world. Through curriculum, discussion, role-playing, and adult modeling, our students discover their individual strengths and enthusiasms, as well as their responsibilities to others and to their own well-being. Projects and activities in service learning help students develop a sense of commitment to their immediate, local and extended communities, while encouraging a sense of participation and belonging.

Veteran's Garden

Directly building on important Turning Point School concepts of community involvement, Level 5 students participate in a gardening program in conjunction with local military veterans. After collaborating to plant and maintain a vegetable garden at the New Directions facility, students and veterans write poetry together. These poems provide tangible proof of students’ personal insight into the lives of veterans, through which learners make valuable and direct connections to the wars studied in American History class. Most importantly, however, interaction with the veterans allows our students to develop an informed respect for those who have served our country.
